Dance as a ground for the evolution of consciousness – Mathan Levkovich

When the invitation came to join the Contact Silence retreat, a sense of curiosity emerged in me.
Dancing for me is a language. A language that exists in a realm that cannot be fully described by words.
A language which is an experience, an experience that can alter my state of being.

There are two conceptual frameworks that have been occupying my attention recently, that I would like to bring with me to the retreat.

The first framework deals with the concept of ‘Egregore’ – which could be described as a collective mind that can be manifested when a group of people consciously come together with a common focus or intention. I have been contemplating with my students in Vienna, attempting to deepen our understanding on what are the necessary conditions that enable the ‘Jam Egregore’ to come into being – What I mean by that is something you might have experienced before, those special jams where you feel connected to the entire space and to everyone around you, and you act as if you are a neuron in a larger network of an external brain, and that brain is guiding you, shaping your experience…

The second framework deals with the concept of ‘Holarchies’ – which stand for hierarchy of ‘holons’. A holon is something that is simultaneously a whole in and of itself, as well as a part of a larger whole. A simple way to understand holarchies is to look at development structures in nature – Take a few atoms and you get a molecule. Few molecules and you have a cell, few cells you get an organ etc etc. Each level in the hierarchy has it own ‘wholeness’ and at the same time is acting as a part of something larger. In a jam space, we can observe the following holarchy – in the bottom of the holarchy we have the solo body. Two soloist merge into one duet. Few duets form a little group. Several small groups can merge into one large group. The interesting question that we can ask is how to ‘split’ our attention between our own wholeness and the fact that we are also a part of a larger whole…

Looking forward to sharing time and space with you all,
Matan

Matan

CONTACT SILENCE

CONTACT SILENCE retreats is a social promotion project of LIBERA MENTE APS association

We firmly believe that contact improvisation holds great potential on a social and communicative level and carries within it an unequivocal educational message. In addition to being the vanguard of the natural and authentic movement, it teaches respect for one’s body and the other, nourishing the fundamental need of the human being to physical contact, gives joy and well-being to those who practice it, reconnects man to his creativity and the primordial dimension of the game.
